About The Swedish Museum of Performing Arts
Music, Theatre and Dance
The Swedish Museum of Performing Arts is a national museum dedicated to music, theater, and dance. Here, you can explore the history and modern expressions of the performing arts. Costumes, musical instruments, and original scripts are showcased alongside interactive stations and multimedia artworks.

The museum is housed in the beautiful Kronobageriet, a historic building from the 1600s. This site has previously served as a bakery, armory, and liquor cellar. As one of northern Europe’s oldest preserved industrial buildings, it’s as much a part of the museum experience as the exhibits themselves.
The museum is a part of the Statens musikverk – National Collections of Music, Theatre and Dance, an institution under the Ministry of Culture.
50,000 Objects – A World-Class Collection
The Swedish Museum of Performing Arts boasts an extensive collection of nearly 50,000 objects, including instruments, stage models, puppets, and stage costumes. Our instrument collection is among the largest in the world, with over 6,000 items, some dating back to the early 1600s.
Many of these objects are on display at the museum, while a majority are kept in storage. Our curators continually work on conservation, documentation, and support for research.
