Our Collection
Performing arts are the art of the moment. Can they be preserved, and if so, how?
Preserving the Art of the Moment
How can the ephemeral nature of the performing arts be preserved? This question has been central to the museum for nearly 125 years.
Our mission is to safeguard Sweden’s cultural heritage in dance, music, and theater. The collection preserves the artistic expressions of both craftsmanship and performance, as well as memorabilia and personal belongings of artists and performers.
History
The museum’s collection has evolved through the merging of different collections from several museums, since 2010, they have been part of The Swedish Museum of Performing Arts’ collection. Its content reflects the histories of the predecessor museums, and the objects preserved there.
What’s in the Collection?
The museum’s collection comprises over 50,000 objects spanning from the Middle Ages to the present day.
Costume and Stage Decorations
A significant portion is dedicated to theater and dance, featuring costumes, props, and stage decorations from numerous performances. The collection includes sketches for costumes and set designs, as well as models used by tailors and set builders to create finished pieces for the stage. Our collection provides a unique insight into the work of costume designers and set designers and how the magic of theater comes alive both on stage and behind the scenes.
Puppets from Around the World
The museum’s collection holds a vast array of objects from puppet theaters, ranging from small model theaters, often used at home, to large productions staged in theaters. While the focus is on Swedish puppet theaters, the collection also boasts an extensive international assortment of puppets from around the globe. Here, you’ll find examples of the four main puppet theater techniques: hand puppets, rod puppets, marionettes, and shadow puppets.

Classical and Modern Instruments
The museum houses one of the world’s largest instrument collections, featuring over 6,000 instruments from across the globe. While the focus is on classical and folk instruments, the collection also includes modern electronic instruments.
Preserving Performing Arts for the Future
Most of the objects are securely stored in our facilities to ensure their preservation for future generations. A selection is showcased in our exhibitions, offering a deeper understanding of the history and craftsmanship of the performing arts.
