Reading group: Future Brown Library

The Swedish Museum of Performing Arts presents the Future Brown Library reading circle, in partnership with John-Paul Zaccarini and Pernilla Glaser. This reflective reading circle was developed based on the Swedish Research Council/Stockholm University of the Arts’ FutureBrownSpace research project led by John-Paul, and the Future-making Academy reading circle created by Pernilla in partnership with Malmö University.

Swedish version

One reading circle with three sessions

Are you interested in the ways in which inclusion, exclusion, power and authority can be organised around skin colour? Would you like to reflect on how post-colonial constructions of whiteness impact daily life for white, brown and black people? Would you like to explore how race manifests in different interactions? Are you interested in how contemporary research and literature can support new and different ways of thinking and acting?

Anyone interested in these questions is welcome to participate. The requirement is that you can attend all sessions and are interested in post-racism, collaboration and a future-oriented perspective. If you work in a setting in which you experience exclusion and microaggressions, or if you want more tools for discussing and working with heterogeneity and equity, you are welcome. The reading circle is held in English, but there are many opportunities for discussion in Swedish, as most of the work comprises group exercises.

Reflect and discuss

Future Brown Library offers contemporary texts from a curated list and a place to discuss, think and feel together. The reading circle will cover topics such as unconscious racism, care and memory, co-dependency and masochism, forgiveness and mercy, the intersection of race and gender, and various concepts for racialization and whiteness and how they relate to feminism and class.
